Discostrata

The genealogy of recorded music, mapped to the millisecond.

Records inherit from records. A break, a vocal line, a bar of horns — carried forward, sped up, filtered, chopped, and buried in something new. Those relationships are real, and almost none of them are written down precisely enough to be useful.

We are building the data that makes musical inheritance traversable: which recording inherits from which, exactly where in each, and what was done to it in between.
